Sexual Assault / Rape
If you are being touched by a family member, adult friend, or someone else and it makes you uncomfortable, unhappy, or confused, then you may be a victim of sexual abuse.
IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT. You don’t have to keep it a secret---talk to an adult you trust or call an agency listed below who can help. You have the right to say “NO” to anyone who tries to touch you in any way that makes you uncomfortable.
Rape, sexual assault, or the attempt to do either is a crime. The rapist can be anyone---a neighbor, date, friend, relative, or even a stranger.
If you have been raped, it is also NOT your fault. Don’t be afraid to call for help---if you need someone to talk to, call TeenLine, 713-529-TEEN, anytime.
Victims of rape or sexual assault should see a doctor right away. Seeing a doctor in an emergency room does not mean you have to involve the police. It is important to protect yourself---use common sense and avoid putting yourself in risky situations.
- Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
- Don’t go off with people you do not know well.
- Don’t let strangers in your house---verify the identity of any repairman, police officer, etc.
- Check your car before getting in---keep car keys in your hand before you get to your car.
- Never hesitate to ask a friend to walk you to your car or house.
- If someone is following you or if you feel threatened, go to a public place, run, yell “fire,” and make lots of noise.
- Date in groups.
